A guide to your local GP practice

Information on how to access GP services, including making appointments, understanding patient rights, managing prescriptions, using digital health tools, and understanding communication and complaints processes.

Accessing your GP practice (General Practitioner) should be straightforward, but many people tell us they find it difficult.

People commonly tell Healthwatch about difficulty booking appointments (especially online), and unclear communication when trying to access GP services. Additionally, some struggle getting through on the phone or receiving support for specific needs, such as those with learning disabilities.

Feedback often highlights frustration with accessibility, including long queues and delays in response, though patients generally report positive experiences once they are seen by healthcare professionals. There is a consistent call for better access to services and clearer, more efficient communication.

Whilst 53% of people report difficulty accessing services at the doctors, as found in this year's GP Patient Survey, 90% feel their needs are met once they get an appointment. We want to see that this continues and help people on their healthcare journey.
