Building bridges to better mental health

In 2023, we asked you to share your experiences of mental health support in North Yorkshire. Whether you had a great experience or faced challenges, we wanted to hear from you. And you delivered.
Your feedback highlighted real issues—long waiting times, inconsistent support, and a mental health system that often felt overwhelming, unresponsive and not tailored to individual needs. But you also told us about the incredible work being done by mental health practitioners, community organisations, and dedicated healthcare professionals.
We took what you said seriously, and now, change is happening.
What has changed for the better?
Because of your feedback, the local NHS (North Yorkshire and York Mental Health Alliance, which includes Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust) has taken action.
They have introduced complex emotional needs specialists, placed mental health professionals in GP practices, and trained staff to use a trauma-informed care approach.
These changes are already making a difference by providing faster, more person-focused support and reducing pressure on emergency services.

We’re seeing real progress, but we know there’s still work to do.
Why your feedback still matters
If you’ve ever felt that your voice doesn’t count or that ‘nothing ever changes,’ think again. Your stories - whether positive or negative - are helping to shape better services for everyone.
Had a bad experience? Telling us means we can push for improvements.
Had a great experience? Sharing it helps highlight what’s working so more people can benefit.
Your voice matters. It’s making a real impact.
The power of experience
Take Lisa’s story. A single mum from rural North Yorkshire, Lisa struggled with anxiety for years. Her "excellent GP" gave her the encouragement over the years that helped Lisa build up the confidence to seek help and self-refer to Sophie, one of the first mental health practitioners.
“Discovering a mental health practitioner was life-changing—maybe even lifesaving.”
Sophie didn’t just provide support—she gave Lisa hope for a brighter future. Lisa says her "whole outlook changed" and is now doing some volunteering work as and when she feels well enough.
This is the difference the right support can make. And this is why your feedback is so important.
