Timely access to health services in Craven
There is good evidence of a link between rural living and greater difficulties accessing services and support, which in turn can lead to poorer health outcomes. Craven is a highly rural district in North Yorkshire, therefore, Craven Communities Together Health and Care Partnership wanted to find out about people’s experiences of accessing health and well-being services to help them understand what actions are needed to try to improve health outcomes in Craven.
So, how did we reach out?
A survey was distributed from February to May 2022 across Craven. They were collected through online and hard copy versions (including large print and Easy Read). We distributed forms electronically and physically, including copies in all Craven libraries through our Craven Communities Together member organisations. The survey received 571 responses in total.
What did it cover?
The survey gave us an insight into the personal experiences and perceptions of health and social care services including waiting times across a range of services and experience of accessing mental health, dentistry, GPs, hospitals and pharmacies.
The top issues you told us about
- Time taken for appointments and the inconvenience of appointment times
- Transport issues
- Wanting a face-to-face appointment or to see the same person
In conclusion
Many of the issues, particularly access to GP practices and waiting times for mental health and hospital services, are in line with national trends as regularly reported in the media. However, the survey responses highlight more local issues linked to the rurality of Craven but also that while some issues may be in line with national trends, there are always local circumstances and issues that can be addressed without needing national direction and/or guidance.

Produced by Healthwatch North Yorkshire on behalf of Craven Communities Together
We have made a start by exploring transport to health appointments. A number of partners are continuing to identify practical actions to reduce the transport barriers, including alternative community-based health provision.
Many thanks to Healthwatch North Yorkshire for their support with the survey and the report, and for their advocacy for Craven.
