Local NHS secures new 4x4 vehicle to reach more patients in rural areas

Funded by South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the addition of this robust and practical vehicle marks a significant step forward in improving patient care across the rural community.
With a spacious boot to carry essential medical equipment and the ability to navigate farm tracks and off-road terrain, the 4x4 will allow the team to reach those who may otherwise struggle to access healthcare.
Supporting isolated patients, whatever the weather
Maria Hubbuck, from the Leyburn community nursing team, said caring for patients in rural areas comes with its own set of challenges, particularly in winter when snow, heavy rain, and storms can make roads impassable.
Until now, the team has faced difficulties reaching certain homes, particularly in cases where roads were poorly maintained or located on steep hillsides.
“As winter progresses, the team is looking forward to putting the vehicle to the test in snowy conditions, confident that it will prove invaluable in delivering care to those most in need”, she said.
"This vehicle will allow us to reach patients we previously struggled to access during severe weather. And those patients that live in our most rural areas.”
A community-wide benefit
The vehicle will be available for use across Hambleton and Richmondshire, meaning multiple teams can benefit when conditions demand it.
By improving accessibility, the Leyburn team can now provide care more efficiently and safely, ensuring patients receive the support they need no matter where they live.

Rurality and the barriers to healthcare
As highlighted in our rurality and the barriers to healthcare report, North Yorkshire is largely rural, with 85% of its area classified as super-sparse or very rural, leading to challenges in service access, isolation, and transport. So the vehicle is welcome news for people locally.
"Healthwatch North Yorkshire welcomes the potential of this vehicle to enhance healthcare delivery in Leyburn, Hambleton, and Richmondshire.
"With an older population and our county having some of the least densely populated areas in the country, reaching people can be a challenge.
"The vehicle offers a practical solution, bringing essential healthcare services directly to those who need them most, particularly in areas where access to care can be limited.
"By increasing reach in these areas, we’re ensuring that even those in the most rural locations can access quality healthcare and support, improving overall health outcomes for our people."
