Help for patients in Harrogate with hospital appointments
Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust is making contact with patients who have received care, or have previously interacted with the Trust, through email or text, inviting them to sign up for our new patient portal called Patients Know Best.
If you have received an email from hdft.patient.portal@notifications.service.gov.uk or a text from HDFT NHS then please consider registering for Patients Know Best, which is more convenient for many people.
What is an outpatient?
If you have an appointment in a hospital or clinic but do not need to stay overnight, it means you're being treated as an outpatient or a day patient.
How will the patient portal help you?
- Ensuring you receive most outpatient appointment letters as soon as they are issued
- Stopping any confusion through letters lost in the post or arriving in the wrong order
- Keeping all your letters safe in one place; no more hunting for your appointment letter as you get ready to head off to the hospital
- Avoiding the need to call our busy telephone lines if you want to reschedule or cancel an appointment, as you can do it all through the patient portal
- Enabling you to help the NHS GO GREEN by reducing postage and paper costs
Staying accessible
Signing up for Patients Know Best is optional and appointment letters will continue to be sent to those people who do not sign up.

How to register for Patients Know Best
You need an internet enabled device such as a PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone to access the patient portal.
Register for Patients Know Best using your NHS login
If you do not already have an NHS login (also used to access the NHS App) you will be prompted to create one.
How to access Patients Know Best
Once registered, there are two ways to access our patient portal:
Through the NHS app, using your NHS login
Through the Patients Know Best website
Some Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust patients have already signed up to Patients Know Best. If you receive some health services from a different Trust, then you may already be signed up for Patients Know Best through that health trust.
For mobile users the NHS App is available on iOS and Android.
