Volunteer stories: Patrick

Our volunteer, Patrick, shares why he volunteered at Healthwatch North Yorkshire and how it helps him and the community
Patrick, volunteer at Healthwatch North Yorkshire.

Why did you become a volunteer?

"I decided to join Healthwatch North Yorkshire because it is local and aims to improve health and social care, which is dear to me.

I experienced first-hand health service when I had an accident a few years ago and required hospitalisation for a couple of weeks. During this challenging time, I had great support from my wife and the healthcare provider but at the same time felt vulnerable when things did not go right. I believe Healthwatch can make a difference by providing a powerful voice to patients and being a catalyst for change."

What have done as a volunteer?

"I have been volunteering since December 2021. I have helped design surveys and proofreading documents. I have even have distributed flyers at community venues across North Yorkshire whilst I was out riding on my motorbike.

I have helped the team with visits to care homes to understand current challenges and opportunities. Healthwatch North Yorkshire has a legal power to visit health and social care services and see them in action. This power is known as 'Enter and View' and offers a way for us to meet some of our statutory functions and to identify what is working well with services and where they could be improved."

What do you like about Healthwatch?

"I have been amazed by the professionalism of the staff and volunteers. It is great to see such passion, energy, and commitment."
