Healthy living - how to get support with your weight
In North Yorkshire, over 64% of adults are classified as overweight. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Managing your weight effectively can boost your energy, sleep quality, and overall wellbeing. And whilst struggling with weight can feel overwhelming and be a sensitive topic for many, the good news is that support is available.
Weight management clinics
How they can help you
North Yorkshire’s weight management clinics offer a free, 24-week programme designed to help adults lead healthier lives. These clinics provide tailored support from qualified lifestyle advisors to assist you with eating well and staying active. You’ll receive a personalised plan, regular check-ins, and access to a mix of online, phone, and in-person guidance. The focus is on sustainable, long-term changes rather than quick fixes.
How you can join
The programme is open to residents aged 18 and over with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or more. If you have a BMI of 25 and belong to a black or ethnic minority group or have conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, you also qualify. Your doctor (also known as a GP - General Practitioner) or another healthcare professional can help determine if you are eligible. Please speak with them to find out more.
How it helps
Local clinics offer structured programmes across North Yorkshire. Over 90% of people who joined found the support beneficial. They reported improvements in their physical and mental health.
The programmes emphasise balanced nutrition, increased physical activity, and behaviour changes to achieve sustainable weight loss.
